Fall Move-In

August 28 – 30, 2024

University Housing Fall Move-In dates will be August 28-30, 2024. Some residents of a few approved student groups, including Housing student employees, may receive an earlier move-in date to participate in required trainings or orientation activities. Students will receive their pre-assigned move-in date and time when they receive their room assignment this summer, so we recommend waiting to make travel plans until they know their date.

Note: Once students have received their pre-assigned move-in date and time, they will be able to switch to another available timeslot in their My UW Housing. Available dates and times will fluctuate as other students adjust their schedules.

Additional details about fall move-in for the 2024-25 academic year will be available in August 2024.

Fall Move-In (2023)

August 27 & August 30 – September 1

We’re so excited to welcome you to campus! UW-Madison University Residence Hall move-in for fall 2023 will take place August 27 and August 30 – September 1.

Note: Some residents of a few approved groups may receive a different move-in date to participate in required training or orientation activities. If your move-in date is different from August 27 and August 30-September 1, visit our approved groups move-in page for specific details on your move-in process.

Your Move-In Day

A specific move-in date and time was assigned to you in My UW Housing when you received your room assignment information in June. Assigned days/times allow us to spread out activity evenly to ensure available resources and parking. Depending on the availability of open slots, if you’d like to request a change to your assigned move-in date/time because it does not fit your schedule, log in to My UW Housing to select a new one by August 28. Please note that you will need to delete your current move-in time slot prior to signing up for a new one.

Note: Residents who are unassigned will get their room assignment before move-in. We continue to assign students daily as we get cancellations.

What to Bring

  • Wiscard or a valid government-issued photo ID (to check-in and receive your room key)
  • Printed parking permit (available to download in the “Move-In” section of My UW Housing)
  • Bedsheets (twin XL, twin with extra deep corners, or jersey sheets)
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Water
  • Soft rubber mallet (not required, but helpful to assist with lofting)
  • See what furnishings are provided and what Bucky would bring for additional items to bring and items that are not allowed (we strongly suggest not over-packing)

Shipping Packages

If necessary, residents with a room assignment can ship packages prior to their move-in date for pick-up. Unassigned residents waiting for their room assignment should not ship packages until they receive their room assignment. Due to storage space constraints, do not ship items more than one week before your move-in date.

All US Mail and packages are received and distributed by your hall desk. Mail is placed in your mailbox. Packages are logged, placed in storage, and an email is sent to your @wisc.edu account notifying you a package is available for pickup. You must have your Wiscard (or another form of ID) with you to receive your package, but you do not need to print out the email notification. To avoid confusion and delays, mail should be addressed with:

Full preferred name (first and last)
Room number, residence hall house, residence hall name (available in My UW Housing)
Residence hall street address (available on individual hall pages)
Madison, WI, residence hall zipcode (available on individual hall pages)

For example:
Buckingham Badger
6206 Withey, Ogg Residence Hall
835 W. Dayton Street
Madison, WI 53706

On Your Move-In Day

  1. Arrive at Your Entry Point
Entry points for each residence hall community can be viewed on our fall move-in map.
  2. Park Your Vehicle
Parking permits are available in My UW Housing. You will need to print out this permit, write your cell phone number on it, and bring the permit on your move-in date and display it on your dashboard. Permits are:

    • Required for unloading and long-term parking usage
    • Only valid on your scheduled move-in day
    • Valid for one free entry and exit in long-term parking (due to capacity limitations, you will be directed to paid parking lots after one long-term parking entry and exit)
    • Note: overnight trailer parking is not permitted
  3. Check-In
After reaching your entry point and parking, head to your hall’s check-in location. There, you’ll be given your room key and a moving cart.
Note: if you are not arriving on August 27 or August 30 – September 1, learn more about your move-in and check-in process on our approved groups move-in page.
  4. Move-In
You and your visitors are only allowed one vehicle in unloading areas at a time. You’ll have 45 minutes to unload all your items from your vehicle from the start of your assigned move-in time. After 45 minutes, you must move your car. After unloading, visitor parking on campus and in City of Madison parking ramps is available. Moving carts must be returned after 45 minutes or as soon as you have finished unloading your vehicle.
Note: long-term parking is only available on August 27 and August 30 – September 1. If you’re not arriving on these dates, please see your parking information on our approved groups move-in page.
  5. Set Up Your Room
Housing staff are not available during move-in to loft beds. Residents and families are encouraged to loft their own beds during move-in. If residents would like assistance lofting their bed after move-in, a maintenance request can be submitted after move-in and will be completed in approximately a week. You can also submit a request for help after move-in.
  6. Remove Trash & Recycling
It is your responsibility to remove all trash and recycling from your residence hall throughout the year and take it to the collection bins outside. Recycling volunteers will be available to help you sort your waste items during Sustainable Move-In, which helps keep 50,000+ pounds of material from landfills every year. Learn more about the Housing recycling guidelines. Plastic Bag recycling bins are also located near each hall desk.
  7. Connect to the Internet
To connect to UWNet, UW-Madison’s wireless Internet service, simply select it from the list of networks and launch any web browser. You’ll be automatically redirected to a registration page where you can enter your NetID information to get connected.
  8. Enjoy a Meal with Your Guests
After unloading and moving your vehicle, Housing Dining will offer two extra guest swipes per resident account on your dining plan, valid through September 2 and only on your specific move-in date at Housing Dining markets (not for use at Starbucks, Bean and Creamery, Southeast Café, or Flamingo Runs).
Note: Stop by the registers or our staffed tables in front to sign up for the Ticket to Takeout program so you can take food to-go throughout the year!

Checklist to Complete

Before leaving, all residents must complete and sign the following spring move-out checklist and attach it to the outside of their door before moving out. A printed version of this checklist will be provided on resident doors. Staff will inspect residents’ rooms and document any concerns after residents depart. Failure to complete the checklist will result in additional charges. If you have questions about the condition of your room, contact Housing staff.

  1. Remove all belongings from your room/hallway and donate/recycle/trash unneeded items outside at the location nearest you (see maps posted in your hall)
  2. Retrieve items placed in kitchen areas, empty and clean/wipe down waste bins, recycling bins, and drawers
  3. Remove all items (tape, stickers, poster putty, nails, etc.) from walls, ceiling, and both sides of doors
  4. Empty, clean, defrost, and leave the Housing refrigerator(s) unplugged and open (do not use sharp objects to pry ice out of the freezer)
  5. Ensure your room has all furniture in your room/assembled and return it to its original layout including bed height (view room layouts on your hall’s web page under “room types” to see your room’s original layout)
  6. Clean and sweep/mop or vacuum your room (do not sweep dirt into the hallway) and leave closets/drawers open
  7. Close windows, open drapes or blinds, turn off your lights, and lock your door
  8. Take your bike with you when you leave
    1. Bikes left for more than 72 hours are considered abandoned, including at the Elm Drive bike shelter. Abandoned bikes are subject to being impounded beginning immediately after move-out. Checklist to Complete Before Leaving

In addition, complete the following checklist before leaving your room for winter break. A printed version of this checklist will be provided on resident doors.

Repairs

Winter break is a perfect time to report any needed repairs so that Housing staff can fix them while you are gone.

Pack Your Belongings

Did you take what you need during winter break? If you are not signed-up for winter break housing, you will not have access to your residence hall or room during winter break.

  • Remember necessary medications, passports, etc.
  • Remove plants and fish
  • Take your bike home (to allow for snow removal)
  • Don’t store your moped in your room (it will be removed at a cost to you)

Get Your Room Ready

Typical room temperatures will remain in our normal ranges for occupied spaces. University Housing will not be responsible for damage to items left in rooms. On your way out the door, please remember to:

  • Remove items on or near radiators
  • Clean/sweep/mop/vacuum your room
  • Empty all waste/recycling containers, take recycling & trash outside and donate unneeded items near your hall desk
  • Keep refrigerator(s) plugged-in and remove food that could spoil (perishable items may be disposed of by Housing staff if not removed)
  • Turn off any alarm clocks and unplug any power strips and other appliances (these draw phantom energy even when not in use)
  • Open blinds, close windows, turn off lights, and lock all windows and doors
  • If your roommate is moving out and not returning next semester, be sure that one set of University-provided furniture is clean and empty prior to leaving for Winter Break.
  • If you have a loaner key, please return to your hall desk before leaving

Note: once all residence halls close at 12 p.m. on December 22, 2023, electronic access for residents not signed up for winter break housing will be turned off and you will not have access to buildings until the residence halls reopen January 20, 2024.
