Bioinformatics Scientist Position in Metagenomics and Evolutionary Genomics

The Bioinformatics Scientist in the Moeller Lab at Princeton University will lead and support projects that employ metagenomics and genomics methods to study the ecology and evolution of microbiomes. The Moeller Lab studies the evolution of relationships between animals and microorganisms, with current work focusing on vertebrates' co-evolutionary histories with bacteria through a combination of -omics approaches, gnotobiotic and microbiology experiments, and natural history. Our group supports researchers with diverse interests in microbiology, ecology, and evolution studying a range of systems, including primates, rodents, lizards, frogs and toads, and birds. We are hoping to attract self-motivated and talented researchers who work well in a team environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with the lab's graduate students and postdocs to develop reproducible bioinformatics workflows for addressing fundamental questions about the ecology and evolution of microbial species within the gut microbiomes of vertebrates. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to develop independent projects in our group.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or similar levels of experience in one or more of these disciplines. Experience handling and analyzing metagenomic and genomic datasets (such as those generating by high-throughput sequencing) as well as experience with scripting in bash, python, and/or R is desired. A background in statistics and/or population genetics is also desired.

In concert with the faculty Director(s), the RD helps develop and implements CSDP's academic and policy research programs. The RD will help CSDP implement SPIA's strategic priorities, especially data science and policy relevance. The RD will proactively maintain an excellent political science research profile. This includes attending and presenting research at academic conferences, seeking and obtaining ongoing opportunities for one's own professional and technical development as a researcher, and publishing with CSDP affiliates in academic and policy outlets under the direction of the CSDP director(s), all in the service of CSDP's research program. The RD will have some time for their own research as well.

* Design and deliver hands-on workshops on research methods, tools, and applications, including the collection or use of datasets, according to affiliates' needs
* Research and statistical consulting to CSDP affiliates

The areas of interest will build strength in new synthetic pathways for renewable plastics, hydrogen production and storage, water treatment with renewable electricity, waste carbon valorization, metals manufacturing, or technologies to eliminate and reduce emerging environmental contaminants related to energy industry; and

*  data science in energy and the environmental systems, including approaches such as network theory, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and others that offer promise for tackling an array of energy problems.  This includes the development and implementation of smart grids, bolstering energy sector cybersecurity, electro-manufacturing, transportation electrification, and increasing the resilience of the grid and networks of infrastructure; optimization of controls for efficient energy services, water, and building systems; planning interdependent service networks in cities; and decision making for technology adoption, energy transitions, and energy markets.
