New Staff Profile

The Philosophy Department recently welcomed Terri Karls in a newly created parttime payroll position, but she is no stranger to the university or its payroll processes. Bringing more than 13 years of payroll experience, she has been a welcome addition to the growing team. She started her payroll career with the state in the UW Hospital Human Resources office back in the 1980s. In those days, payroll was hand-calculated for employees from time clock punch cards. Since then, she has alternated between working for the UW and her personal passion and calling, horses!
Terri grew up on her family’s farm in the Waunakee/Dane area and had her first pony at 3 years old. Riding has been her life since then and as far back as she can remember, she dreamed of having a horse stable. In 1994, Terri and her husband began building their current home and a boarding stable on the family land. In August 2007, their family farm was recognized at the Wisconsin State Fair for 100 continuous years of ownership of the family property. Today that century farm is known as Canterberry Ridge Stable.

Back in the day, Terri could have up to 16 horses boarded and in her care. Today, she only has 4 horses of her own on the farm. She offers private/group riding lessons and hosts local children's birthday parties. Her daughter, Lexy, is a high school senior and is planning to leave the nest for college this fall pursuing a nursing career. Terri decided it was time to come back to her UW roots—a payroll position. She said she loves the vibe, energy, and kindness of the campus community. She enjoys her payroll work and likes to be part of the team.

Now that the horse stable takes up less of her time, she has more free time to hike, travel and go to the local dog park with her dog, Duke.
