KINO and Russian Rock

Learn about the underground rock scene in Leningrad in the 1980s and at the same time, meet – and compete – with students from other Russian Flagship programs in an online game based on the award-winning 2018 film Leto, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov.

Sign up to participate in a fun series of activities through the Language Flagship to learn about the underground rock scene in Leningrad in the 1980s and at the same time, meet – and compete – with students from other Russian Flagship programs in an online game based on the award-winning 2018 film Leto, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. The film is a fictional story based on real historical figures, including Viktor Tsoy, co-founder and leader of the hugely popular band KINO, whose songs continue to provide a soundtrack for protest movements today.

As a Russian Flagship student participating in this program you will:

    • Watch the film Leto with your home Russian Flagship program.
    • On Monday, March 1, virtually attend a lecture by renowned expert on Russian rock music Artemy Troitsky on Victor Tsoy and KINO: Myths and Reality of Russian Protest Rock Music (The lecture will be in Russian and will be recorded.)
    • Learn about underground Russian music culture by completing online activities about Viktor Tsoy, KINO, and the role of underground rock music in 1980s Russia.
    • With your teammates from other Russian Flagship programs, prepare for the trivia game.
    • On Friday, April 16, compete against other teams in a fun, online game based on the film Leto, the lecture by Artemy Troitsky, and the online activities about Viktor Tsoy and KINO. The game will consist of trivia questions on the film, the songs, Viktor Tsoy and KINO, the film’s Leningrad setting, and the cultural context. There will be questions for students at all levels of Russian. Performances between rounds of the game are welcome (but not required)!
    • Have  fun and meet students from other Russian Flagship programs.
