NIAID is the largest funder of infectious and immune-mediated disease research, and globally the institute is playing a major role in responding to disease outbreaks and pandemics. NIAID is at the center of generating and analyzing large, diverse, and complex data sets to accelerate the science of better understanding pathogen transmission and evolution, pathogen-host interactions, host immune response, and infectious and immune-mediated disease pathogenesis, as well as to develop new and improved diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. NIAID aims to advance data science to efficiently use large-scale and complex data for new scientific insights.
Training is an essential part of data science, and NIAID has established the Emerging Leaders in Data Science Fellowship Program to develop a cadre of talented data scientists to advance research in infectious and immune-mediated diseases. This fellowship is managed by NIAID's Office of Data Science and Emerging Technologies.
What will I be doing?
Each fellow in the NIAID Emerging Leaders in Data Science Fellowship Program will be a team member of the Office of Data Science and Emerging Technologies and will collaborate with staff across the institute’s intramural and extramural divisions. Fellows will receive training and hands-on-experience in a broad range of data science topics, including data analytics, informatics methods, and software development, but will also be exposed to how data science funding programs are being developed for research and training, and in the design of data governance and sharing strategies.
The program is rotational in design, with fellows conducting 3-to-4-month projects in NIAID’s intramural and/or extramural programs. Fellows participate in a variety of professional development activities at NIH and elsewhere during their fellowship to broaden their perspectives on NIAID's research mission and data science needs, strengthen their technical competencies, and further develop leadership abilities.

What is the anticipated start date?
The exact start date will be determined between the mentor and applicant at time of selection. The initial appointment is for one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of NIAID contingent on the availability of funds.

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Participants do not become employees of NIH, NIAID, ORAU, ORISE, DOE, or any other agency, and there are no employment-related benefits. Instead, participants will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship, this opportunity will require a suitability/background investigation by NIH. Any offer made is considered tentative, pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
