General Description

Overview
The City of Madison seeks an Analytics Intern to join our Data and Innovation Team. This is a great position for someone interested in combining technical data work with deep consideration of human factors to make an impact on their community.
In this role, the intern will assist in providing innovative solutions to complex problems, working with agency partners to understand what needs and issues to address. The intern will aid in efforts to infuse data and innovation into the City's business processes, and to answer deep questions about the City of Madison. To do so, the intern will apply design thinking, use statistical knowledge to recognize patterns, identify opportunities, pose questions, and make valuable discoveries leading to insights or improvements that have a significant impact on the organization. The Data Team and Innovation Team is housed within the Finance Department's Office of Budget and Program Evaluation. This is a unique opportunity to help local government leverage information management, statistics, data visualization and communication, programming, and project management skills to further a data-informed culture.
The position will be for ten weeks in summer 2022, with full-time hours. Interns will be required to work in-office at least two days per week.

Position Goal

Work with analysts on the Data and Innovation Team to conduct deep quantitative and qualitative analysis and research to assess local conditions; help agencies develop innovative, responsive solutions; and measure progress against clear goals.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

The intern selected for this position will work closely with the Data and Innovation Team to help perform technical analysis and research to leverage innovation and data in order to solve problems and make decisions. This role is critical in supporting the use of data to inform decisions across the city. The ideal candidate will be a solutions-driven individual who enjoys working with others to drive results. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Assist in the process to identify, scope, gather and analyze data for, and execute analytics projects that assess conditions and help provide solutions;
  • Assist Data and Innovation Analysts as they work with agencies to collect data for performance measures for City services;
  • Contribute to ongoing data governance and data management efforts, such as the Data Governance and Data Stewardship programs;
  • Develop and maintain data visualizations, reports, and dashboards.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Desired degree programs include computer science, data science, math, statistics, public policy, political science, geography, economics, and other quantitative social sciences.  Other related programs may also be considered.

  • Data experience.  This experience could be gained in one of the following ways:
    • A minimum of three completed statistics, data analysis, or other data-intensive courses from an accredited two or four year institution.
    • Working with data through data collection, entry, governance, maintenance, management, cleaning, analysis, reporting, visualization, or presentation.
    • Using data and statistical concepts in research or applied settings to understand situations or solve complex problems.
  • Familiarity with SPSS, Stata, R, SQL, Python, and/or other statistical software packages or computer programming languages.

Special Requirements

Work in this position is primarily sedentary, requiring the ability to sit/stand at a desk, work on a computer, and use a monitor for extended periods of time.
