Happy MLK Day! To celebrate, we are highlighting Heewone Lim, a sophomore majoring in Journalism and Folklore and Languages and Cultures of Northern Europe (Dutch). She worked at WORT 89.9 FM over the summer as a news reporting intern and is currently the News Director of WSUM. Heewone joined the J-School because of her interest in getting to know people and learning about their passions and interests. Taking J201 the previous semester sealed the deal for her, as she realized that the J-School offers a strong support system and dedicated faculty members. Her favorite part about the J-School is sitting in Professor McGarr’s office hours to discuss Christian Bale and “Newsies.” Her next goal is to try living in either Ireland or the Netherlands immediately after graduation and to work at NPR. Check out a story that Heewone covered during her summer internship at WORT 89.9 FM! It is about Legal Action of Wisconsin, a non-profit law firm filing a petition with the Wisconsin Supreme Court to reduce the length of time that eviction records are retained. https://buff.ly/47grzL6 How are you celebrating MLK Day? Let us know in the comments! Would you like to be featured in our Student Spotlight series? Submit this form for consideration: https://buff.ly/3TJWrk0

~What if I don't get in?~ College admissions has become downright brutal, particularly at smallish schools like mine. Here is what one potential applicant wrote, on an online forum: "I am on the fence if it is worth it or if there is no chance I am getting in. I am top of my class with 3.99/4 GPA and 4.5/5 as well, 10 AP classes with AP Latin and also Latin 1020, almost all the rest are Honors classes; NHS member; debate club founder; 12th grade student government historian; 11th grade students government treasurer; hostess/cashier work at Sizzlers; summer internship with a department in my state; 9-month internship with organization helping children; volunteer and co-chair for a volunteering organization; worked at Subway for almost 3 years and have maintained jobs since I was 13, LEDA program finalist; Hispanic recognition award; national Latin exam recognition 2 years in a row, high honor award in school, service learning award in school, and school recognitions in Biology, English, and Latin. [...] I do not know if this is important but I have a 31 ACT, 32 superscored, and 1410 SAT." 😲 Comparable examples abound. Students with ~amazing~ early-life accomplishments are questioning whether it's worth even trying to get into a "selective" school. We can be sure that their families are worried, too.

Industry can and should play a crucial role in supporting public education through advocacy. Leveraging its influence, resources, and expertise, it can help improve education. Businesses can collaborate with educational institutions by partnering with K-12 schools, colleges, and universities to create programs that bridge the gap between education and industry needs. These collaborations can involve internships, externships, or apprenticeships. Travis County and City of Austin sponsors Summer Youth Employment Program. https://lnkd.in/gCnBA3z9 Advocacy goes beyond partnerships. Public education has never been properly funded. It benefits industry to increase education funding at local, state, and federal levels. Many school districts have advocacy committees open to families and community members. Austin Independent School District https://lnkd.in/gwMeqUUP. Businesses can support initiatives that aim to reduce educational disparities to ensure that all students have access to high-quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background, even in the face of obstructive efforts by our national and state governments. #publiceducation #careers #industry #advocacy Advocacy on the part of industry can contribute to the improvement of public education, positively influence our future workforce, and create a well-educated society overall.

When I was a junior/senior in Paul Robeson H.S for Business & Technology. In 97-98 I studied stenography. Back then I didn’t take the profession seriously because my long nails 💅🏾 were my priority. Thinking back, I wonder how different my life would be if I valued my career over vanity. This is the reason I now work with the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development Dycd Dycd Youth Employment Program Thomas (DYCD) Summer Youth Employment Program. It gives me the opportunity to provide a employment opportunities to young people while also providing mentorship & career coaching to the next generation of leaders. Question: What are you or your company/organization doing to support employment for youth? Also comment below, if you have changed your career since H.S. and if so, what are you doing now? Most importantly, are you satisfied? #youthemployment #nyc #youthempowerment #hiretalent #highschoolstudents #collegestudents #internshipexperience #internship2023 #intern #summerinternship #eleaseawigginsistheone

Abuse of power and violation of human rights in relation to culture, beliefs and religion of families. We are using this month to celebrate our sister, our first client, Black African woman, who lost her children into care. After four years of struggle, her two children were finally returned to the loving care of their birth mother. The victory is remarkable, considering that until Save The Woman got involved, the Black woman had been denied access to her children for 10 months. https://lnkd.in/eGursG6M We have safely supported return of FORTY-NINE (49) children. Protected FIFTY-SEVEN (57) children from entering CARE SYSTEM. Directly impacted THOUSANDS of families through the AFRICENTRIC Intervention programmes. What are families saying about our Programme in the UK? https://lnkd.in/e9ggeAK The Africentric Parenting Life Skills Development Programme is taught from an Africentric perspective so parents appreciate potential for misunderstanding so they can communicate appropriately and take account of the latest legal position when making parenting decisions. The course explains the Eurocentric worldview, takes a positive African centred approach to parenting, so parents can be empowered to bring up well-adjusted children who value their culture and understand the Eurocentric context in which they live. Our programme has been proved to be cost-effective. Using one of the local authorities in England as a case study, it was evidenced in the rates of children’s social care investigation, section 17 children in need assessments, and children entering care, and the number of days spent in care per child – were statistically significant reduced by 27% within 12 months. Once again, thank you for your usual support. The National Lottery Community Fund The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland National Lottery Heritage Fund Department for Culture, Media and Sport

Regarding Affirmative Action, this is what I just read: “As a successful white woman who served for many years as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, I feel it is incumbent upon me and other white women in my generation to reaffirm the policies that helped us secure our positions in political institutions, academia, business, medicine and law.” Shira A.
