Miquéla Thornton is a professional master's student at the J-School. Her reporting work focuses on climate and environmental justice with stories ranging from science and tech to politics and business. “Some recent work I’m proud of includes an ongoing project on Madison emerging as a hub for nuclear fusion, a potentially limitless clean energy, and what a city that may house some of the world’s first fusion pilot plants could look like and a piece I wrote for my international reporting course on Kenya’s rise as a geothermal powerhouse, its propensity to eliminate energy poverty, and solutions to the displacement of indigenous communities that have come with it.” Check out this link to hear more about Miquéla's work, what brought her to the J-School and what she hopes to do when she graduates. https://buff.ly/3UzQoig

At the height of the pandemic, our Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy began to experiment with Research Attachment Programmes, where students could seek out faculty with common interests and work together on research projects. Unlike work for pay or formal research, here, where the project went depended on the mutual enthusiasm and discovery of student and faculty. I had two RAPs. We worked on society's perceptions of social mobility, and on inequality and what different political systems deliver. I continue to work on those research questions. The two RAPs have graduated with Masters in Public Policy. Today we met for a home-cooked meal and continued a conversation where we agreed to disagree on meritocracy, nuclear power, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and the influence of Tik Tok on hip hop as art form. Being an academic is the best job in the world.

The Arctic Perspectives in the EU Research Agenda | 13th of May in Brussels The European Union supports the sustainable development of the European Arctic in many ways. This includes, for example, the cohesion policy instruments and the more competitive research and innovation framework programme funding. To secure the sustainable development of the EU Arctic area, a better understanding of the area is needed through strong Arctic research across the disciplinary fields. In connection with the EU Arctic Forum and Indigenous Peoples’ Dialogue we, the universities and regions of the European Arctic, wish to invite you to the event "The Arctic Perspectives in the EU Research Agenda". The objective of this event is to discuss how Arctic research can answer to the needs that occur with the transition the region is undergoing. The discussions will focus on the next programming period 2028–2034 and how the ambitions of the EU’s Arctic policy can be included in the future research priorities. In these two papers, we investigate current geomorphic assessment practices for stream channels and make recommendations on improving assessment procedures. Engineers, Geoscientists, Environmental Practitioners, and regulators use geomorphic assessments of stream channels as a critical first step in environmental assessments and stream restoration projects. Geomorphology can identify the root causes of channel instability and inform mitigation options and conceptual designs. However, the dynamic processes governing stream channels are difficult to assess using simple tools. We hope our review of current procedures and recommendations can help improve river management. About the authors: I proud to have collaborated with Stantec’s Dr. David Luzi and Dr. Marwan Hassan to supervise Dr. Elli Papangelakis’ postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia investigating geomorphic assessment procedures. The project was funded by Mitacs through Stantec. Part 1: https://lnkd.in/dPFCK8Ew Part 2: https://lnkd.in/d_e2iS48
