Investigative reporting, pioneered by the ‘muckrakers’ in the early 20th Century, made a comeback, and with it political cynicism and a loss of faith in the goodwill of the political class. Popular contestation had been breeding up since the end of the 1960s, but over the next decade it expanded from young leftists to the general population. In a matter of months, a re-elected president with a landslide majority became a reviled leader that shamed a nation. His farewell salute from the helicopter stairs remains as one of the most iconic images of his tenure at the White House. In hindsight, it is difficult to tell myth from reality. For all the talk about journalism’s role in Nixon’s debacle, the Washington Post investigations were well under way when he got the re-election. Perhaps the record enrolments enjoyed by journalism schools across the US owe more to Alan J. Pakula’s film than to the Woodward and Berstein’s articles, which may have had more influence on the political and the judicial spheres. Submissions will be considered in a two-step fashion: first, interested authors should submit an abstract by 30 November 2023. Those authors whose abstracts are deemed appropriate for the special issue will be notified by 31 January 2024 and will be invited to submit a full paper by 31 May 2024. The titles and abstracts of the proposed papers may be sent to francisco.seoane@uc3m.es, and should include title, author(s) institutional affiliation(s), and a 300-word summary. So chuffed to see the results of an African journalism education project that I began a few years ago before retiring from UNESCO. They were the subject of at a panel at the #IFJ Perugia this week, with live testimonies from two African j-instructors with inspiring accounts about changes in teaching gender-sensitive conflict journalism (Ethiopia) and environmental journalism as a complex and also dangerous beat (Kenya) https://lnkd.in/de6Ar3iD A report on the project (link below), shows the following outputs: 1. Five consensus criteria for what constitutes excellence in African journalism teaching: a. human rights & ethics -centric; b: responsiveness to practical needs in country; c: alert to innovation & new trends; d. attentive to shifting realities - including environmental; e. responsive to the wider communications ecologies. 2. Over 100 j-teachers joined the consultations to develop the above - coming from 80 j-schools in 37 African countries. 3. 10 j-school projects winning support (through Google News Initiative) of $15.5k (for environmental reporting, media viability, digital skills, data journalism, gender mainstreaming, and indigenous communities). African media needs the best capacity-building it can get, and this project has been a significant boost in that regard - including fostering a community of practice across the continent. https://lnkd.in/dv6qP8es

Hot off the press! The paper I presented at the #BIPJRP2023 conference, written with Claudia Mellado, Colette Brin, Sama Nemat Allah and Cheryl Vallender is now out -- Is it us or them? The challenge of getting journalists to participate in academic research https://lnkd.in/gjFkrGEc In the paper we share our struggles trying to encourage journalists to participate in the JRP Canada project, including interviews with some journalists who didn't like our survey, as well as issues the @JRPproject researchers in 28 other countries experienced with recruitment. The goal is to offer ideas around best practice, including building better relationships with journalists, getting them more involved in research design, and allowing more room for context in survey answers, in the hopes of improving journalism studies.

Thanks to God, I have published a new co-authored article with my amazing colleague Dr. Nagwa fahmy about #Egyptian #journalists’ perceptions of #digital #journalism #training effectiveness. Our study provides important indications and applicable solutions to Arab media companies and training partners concerned with #professional #digital_journalism #training in the MENA region. The study determines the training needs of journalists to adapt to innovative journalism practices. The study applies mixed descriptive methods based on The Motivation–Hygiene theory of what motivates employees. Data analysis is based on an online questionnaire with a snowball sample of 134 Egyptian journalists from different media outlets and in-depth interviews with 10 journalists and professional trainers. Findings reveal that the impact of #hygiene factors is stronger than that of motivation factors. This study shows that hygiene factors negatively influence #professional #training and inhibit any positive impacts of motivation factors. The findings of this study are significant to media organizations and professional training providers.
