SCOTUS let’s us down again striking down race-conscious admissions processes as unconstitutional. I don’t want to be numb to these decisions and actions, or the people who support them. But when you are disappointed over and over, and you get angry over and over, there comes a point when you have to protect your peace if you can. I’m protecting my peace. That does not mean inaction or resignation. I’m going to continue to focus on empowering and uplifting communities of color, especially first generation and women of color. I’ll continue to fight for representation because it matters. I’ll continue to show up on this platform because it matters for every person who sees themselves reflected in me and my story. I wish I had that growing up. I needed a Justice Sotomayor and Encanto and In the Heights when I was a child. It would have been so affirming for me, always stuck in between two cultures that I felt I would never be good enough for. Always one of the few and spending so much energy trying to prove this and that. That was then. I’ve let go of what other people may think of me. I’ve evolved and grown into myself and my sense of purpose. I’ve learned to lean into who I am and own it, with a conviction that I feel in my bones. And I’ll continue to help empower other women of color to do the same. Because we need representation at every level in every space. Representation matters to expose us to possibilities and to make our dreams tangible, as Viola Davis says. Supreme Court's Overturning of Affirmative Action and Its Impact on Women's Equality in the Workplace 🚫⚖️🙍♀️ https://lnkd.in/guP4R5me The recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn affirmative action policies raises concerns about the progress we have made and the challenges we face in achieving gender parity. As we navigate the post-pandemic world, it is crucial to recognize the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on women workers. Throughout the crisis, women have been on the front lines, often shouldering additional caregiving responsibilities and facing greater job insecurity. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities, leaving many women vulnerable to layoffs, reduced working hours, and limited career advancement opportunities. https://lnkd.in/gdx8hG4T Furthermore, the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2023 has shed light on the persistent gender disparities that persist in our societies. The report reveals that despite progress in some areas, the gender gap in economic participation and opportunity remains substantial. By overturning affirmative action, we risk perpetuating these disparities and hindering the progress towards workplace gender equality. Affirmative action has played a crucial role in promoting diversity and leveling the playing field for underrepresented groups. There is a conversation to be had about the disproportionate benefits to white women, for sure, but it has provided opportunities for qualified individuals who have historically faced systemic barriers, enabling them to access higher education and professional development programs. By dismantling these policies, we undermine the progress made and undermine the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all. In light of these developments, it is more important than ever to advocate for policies that support gender equality and promote diversity. Organizations and individuals must continue to champion inclusive practices, such as flexible work arrangements, mentorship programs, and equal pay initiatives. We need to collaborate and create environments where everyone can thrive, regardless of their gender or background. Use this moment as a catalyst for change. Affirmative action combats discrimination, promotes diversity, and levels the playing field for underrepresented groups like mine. Ending it amplifies concerns of increased obstacles, discrimination, and limited opportunities. Without affirmative action, diversity and inclusivity in the IT industry may further decline, perpetuating bias in hiring and hindering growth. The pay gap may worsen, denying fair compensation for skills and experience. Preserving affirmative action is crucial to dismantle barriers, address systemic issues, and ensure equal opportunities. As our nation celebrates its 247th year of independence, it is a fitting time to reflect on where we stand today, particularly given recent events.
