The second video in our series introduces the moms at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. Again, the grit and determination of moms facing so many barriers to persist, earn a degree and create a path to a more stable life for their children, is inspiring. You also start to understand the institutional struggles-budgets that limit your innovation, leadership changes and changing student needs. Improving student services for parenting students—for all students—is hard work. But colleges who are committing to greater student centeredness are seeing improved retention and completion and higher enrollment. #workingnation
It’s not easy being a single parent to begin with, but being in college at the same time takes extra effort and support. See Millibel Cotto and Courtney Bleier describe what it’s like to be single mothers while pursuing degrees at Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., to give themselves and their kids a better life. “There is definitely an empowerment feeling because I feel like they’ve been through everything with me, especially my oldest,” Cotto says of her two kids. “They’ve seen all my struggles and somehow they know that I’ve doing this for them. I think they are proud of me and they respect it.” Adds Bleier, who is motivated by a young son, “Every day, no matter what happened to me, he just made the day better. So I would just work harder and try harder, and try different things just to give him a better life.” Get their full stories at https://lnkd.in/eJNcg3dT. #StudentParents #SingleMoms #Inspiration #MonroeCommunityCollege Lara Everly Emily Lallouz Bonnet Senda David Auerbach Alborz Kamalizad Melissa Panzer Joan Lynch Arthur Bilger Mengfang Yang ECMC Foundation

What is the smallest number of people that could appear in the photo? Answer: 8 - 4 young children, 2 of each gender; the children's mother and father, and the children's maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather.

Legacy admissions - now also legally challenged are real and give some folks a huge advantage. So does being rich. According to this article, “kids from the richest 1% were 77 times more likely to attend an Ivy League colllege than those from families in the bottom fifth of the income distribution.” Sure- there will be a lot of factors that make a difference. But, “with the SAME academic credentials” kids from the richest 1% are TWICE as likely to attend an elite private college as a student from a middle class family. Add some historical context …. Yes, accurate history - including about the horrors of slavery (including for Florida public school kids) matters. Why are so of us many comfortable with the richest among us getting privileges (that they don’t actually need) but not with attempts to acknowledge historical inequities in college admissions? For example, I was chatting with someone who said she was so glad that there was no more affirmative action because now her son has a better shot at Harvard. I said, “maybe you should worry about all those legacy kids.” It’s so easy to scapegoat the black kids as the reason your kid didn’t get into Harvard…. #dei #affirmativeaction #legacyadmissions Note: these are my personal views and personal expressive speech, and do not represent the views of any institution with which I currently am, or have previously been, affiliated.
“Affirmative action for rich kids is alive and well.”

Jan 8, 2024 Rick's Alone Time with God: I am now taking action so that their latest adjusted plans will fail as well. They want to take down my children and my anointed ones. That will not happen no matter how many people and institutions they control. I am enjoying seeing them fail over and over again. #EnemywllFail #GodsProtection #OurRefuge Blog: https://lnkd.in/gE-f4s4u
