The more I delve into the early prep work I am doing to get grounded on my dissertation topic, the more I realize how heavy it will be to see it through. Nevertheless, to cause change for black women, I must go the distance. Who knows? I may one day get to do a TED Talk (my dream). #change #DrBarbieInProgress #psychologicalsafety

⚖ We may like to think our institutions are leading the way in social justice, diversity, and equity, but studies around the world have found that female students and academics are ‘significantly less likely than comparable male candidates to receive funding, be granted meetings with professors, be offered mentoring, or even to get the job.’ (Criado Perez, 2019, p.95). Ouch. This month's blog re-visits a favourite book (and animated mind map of the chapters) and hones in on some highlights - lowlights, perhaps - on the 'Myth of Meritocracy' (Ch. 4) and how it plays out in higher education. Next time a report on student satisfaction hits your inbox, or the latest QILT survey results, or the research publications and citations for your academic staff, feel free to ask a few more questions of the data. Is it showing you the full picture, really? https://lnkd.in/gN8qHPnZ #HigherEducation #DEI #InvisibleWomen

Moving forward, I think it’s increasingly important that as men, we pay attention to the frameworks and models that we are using to guide young boys. Since finishing my essay, I’ve been reading more of Frans De Waal’s most recent book, titled “Different” and in the chapter I just finished reading, emphasis is placed on cultivating knowledge that helps to shape the youth, specifically boys in this context, in such a way that helps them realise the importance of respecting women, as a core and integral component of their masculinity. As society continues to rapidly change, may we all remember the important role that women play in helping create this shared experience, the greater we can educate our boys to respect themselves; the greater they may nurture and care for women. 💪
