  • CS Professor Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau assumed the directorship of the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS).

Research Awards
  • UW–Madison was named 6th in national research rankings, surpassing $1.7 billion in research expenditures.
  • Yuhang Zhang received the NIH, NEI-funded R01 award to develop scene-aware AR systems for low vision people. 
  • Patrick McDaniel and colleagues won the ACSAC 2024 Test of Time Award for “Semantically Rich Application-Centric Security in Android."
  • CS faculty had 29 papers accepted to NeurIPS 2024.
 
Research Spotlight
 
Paris Koutris addresses the “fundamental problem” of database theory, receives string of awards
At the 2023 and 2024 Symposiums on Principles of Database Systems, Koutris received four distinguished paper awards for his groundbreaking work in database theory and computing joins. 

“Some of these introduce improved algorithms that we prove are doing joins more efficiently,” explains Koutris. “Some of the other work is on lower bounds, meaning we prove that our method is the best possible algorithm.”

Kick-Off on 2/18: The N+1 Institute announced a new reverse pitch competition inviting students to pitch novel tech solutions to GE HealthCare.
Meet the students who used approximate computing techniques to win the N+1 Institute’s campus-wide AI sustainability competition in December.
A team from the Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC) presented in 19 workshops and panels at the European HTCondor Workshop.
 
Student Research
  • Once again, a UW–Madison team came in first at the regional International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).
  • UW–Madison’s student-run MadHacks event, one of the largest hackathons in the midwest, received over 1,000 applications from students around the country.
