Not only did he come away with further training, but he found a new family, too.

The four-day event offers support, information, and leadership opportunities to department chairs, program directors, faculty members, and other staff.

New Chief Ophthalmology Resident
Breanna Aldred, MD has been named chief ophthalmology resident for the 2024-25 academic year. Aldred will assume responsibilities July 1. As chief resident, Aldred will assist with creating resident training schedules, be involved in various strategic leadership meetings, organize and lead educational conferences, and serve as liaison between the residency program and division faculty. Congratulations, Dr. Aldred!

Five accomplished ophthalmology faculty members in the School of Medicine and Public Health have successfully campaigned and received approval of their promotion dossiers. Yao Liu, MD, MS and
Colleen McDowell, PhD will be promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at UW-Madison, effective July 1, 2024.
Amitha Domalpally, MD, PhD, Laura Kopplin, MD, PhD, and
Anna Momont, MD will be promoted to the rank of Associate Professor (Clinical Health Sciences track), effective June 30, 2024. Congratulations Drs. Liu, McDowell, Domalpally, Kopplin, and Momont!

Welcome Dr. Parker!
We
are pleased to welcome Emily Parker, OD to the department. Dr. Parker graduated from the Ohio State University College of Optometry in Columbus, Ohio. She completed residency training in Low Vision at the Light House for the Blind and also in Ocular Diseases at the Illinois College of Optometry - both in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Parker also performed clinical rotations in Low Vision training at the Spectrios Institute in Wheaton, Illinois. She enjoys the full spectrum of ocular disease presentations and management, and plans to establish a Low Vision Rehabilitation program in rural Wisconsin. She would be pleased to evaluate patients from school-age on up. She will practice in both of our Mauston and Portage clinical sites in Wisconsin. Her first day with UW Health was January 22, 2024.

The McPherson Eye Research Institute announced four recipients of the 2023 Age-related Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and Glaucoma/Optic Neuropathies Awards. These $50,000 competitive awards are given annually to deserving laboratories to advance the research of these devastating ocular diseases.

- Ismail Zaitoun, PhD for "Undesirable Outcomes of Wound Healing in Exudative Age-related Macular Degeneration."

Yasmin Bradfield, MD presented "Anterior Segment Optical Computed Tomography in Pediatric Ophthalmology" during a visiting professorship on January 17 at Northwell Health Department of Ophthalmology and Eye Institute in New York.
Curtis Brandt, PhD received a $45,000 grant from the Retina Research Foundation (RRF) in support of his project "Gene Therapy for Retinal Degenerative Diseases." This is the second year of RRF support for the project.

Ophthalmology residents participated in the annual Glaucoma Jeopardy tournament on January 14. The competition was blustery while our competitors faced off in blizzard conditions... virtually. Organized by Glaucoma Service Chief and Glaucoma Fellowship Director Yao Liu, MD, MS, the event is part of the learners’ preparation for their Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program exams. The winning team "Nenita and George(s) Lucas" consisted of: Nenita Maganti, MD; Georges Guillaume, MD; and Lucas Maakestad, MD. After an intense final round, Dr. Maakestad took home the high score.

- Diagnosis of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy
- Confluent central guttae in the study eye that can be removed by descemetorhexis of a circular area of 5.5 mm diameter or less
- BCVA of 75 letters or fewer (Snellen equivalent of 20/32 or worse)
